The hair care industry has a transparency problem. The appearance of healthy hair — shine, smoothness, reduced frizz, apparent thickness — can be manufactured through synthetic silicone coating of the hair shaft without any improvement in actual hair health. A person can use a product daily for years, see visible results, and be simultaneously worsening the underlying condition the product appears to be treating.
What silicones are actually doing
Dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, amodimethicone — these are the primary silicones in most mainstream hair products. They fill in the raised cuticle scales that indicate a damaged hair shaft, reflecting light evenly and creating the appearance of smooth, healthy hair. They also coat the surface of the scalp, reducing moisture exchange with the environment and gradually accumulating with each application.
This buildup requires clarifying shampoos to remove — which contain more aggressive surfactants that cause more cuticle damage, requiring more silicone on the next application. It is a product dependency loop with no natural exit that does not involve a multi-week adjustment period during which the hair looks worse before it looks better.
The peer-reviewed case for rosemary oil
In 2015, a randomised controlled trial published in the Journal of Dermatology compared rosemary oil against 2% minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine) for androgenic alopecia over six months. Both groups showed statistically significant increases in hair density. Rosemary oil produced comparable results to minoxidil without minoxidil's documented side effects — scalp dryness, cardiovascular effects in some users, and rebound hair loss on discontinuation.
The mechanism is rosemary oil's documented ability to inhibit 5-alpha reductase (the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, the primary driver of androgenic hair loss) and to stimulate circulation in the scalp microvasculature. These are pharmacologically meaningful effects from a plant extract, not the cosmetic coating effect of silicones.
Bhringraj, amla, and the Ayurvedic tradition
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hair loss and scalp health for centuries. Modern in vitro research has demonstrated DHT-inhibiting properties — the same mechanism targeted by pharmaceutical DHT blockers — as well as documented effects on hair follicle proliferation. Amla (Indian gooseberry, Phyllanthus emblica) has one of the highest natural vitamin C concentrations of any plant and has been documented to strengthen the hair shaft and support scalp health through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
These are not alternative medicine claims. They are traditionally-used botanicals with a growing body of peer-reviewed research that the pharmaceutical-oriented hair loss industry has had little commercial incentive to fund or promote.
