Chronic dry skin is one of the most common skin complaints in the US, and one of the most poorly understood. The conventional framing — that dry skin is a water deficit requiring more moisture — leads to products that address the sensation of dryness without addressing its cause. The result is a cycle in which the products marketed to solve the problem are structurally preventing its resolution.

The skin barrier: what it is and why it matters

The skin's acid mantle is a pH 4.5–5.5 film of sebum, sweat, and microbial metabolites that sits at the surface of the stratum corneum. It regulates transepidermal water loss, maintains the skin microbiome, and protects against pathogen colonisation. When it is disrupted — by harsh surfactants, synthetic fragrance sensitisers, or alkaline products — the skin loses water faster than it can retain it, becomes reactive to inputs it would normally tolerate, and becomes susceptible to colonisation by pathogenic organisms.

This is not dryness. This is a compromised barrier — and it has a specific cause, a specific mechanism, and specific ingredients that repair it versus ingredients that do not.

Why petrolatum and mineral oil do not work

Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) and mineral oil are the primary emollients in the majority of conventional moisturisers. Both are petroleum derivatives. Both are occlusive — they form a film on the skin's surface that reduces water loss by creating a physical barrier. This produces the immediate sensation of moisturisation: the skin feels less dry because water is being retained beneath the occlusive layer.

What petrolatum and mineral oil do not do is penetrate the stratum corneum, deliver lipids or ceramides that the barrier needs to function, nourish the skin microbiome, or address any of the structural causes of barrier dysfunction. Remove the petrolatum and the skin is in the same state it was before, or worse — because the skin has downregulated its own sebum production in response to the external occlusion.

The paradox of conventional skincare: products that disrupt the barrier (SLS cleansers, synthetic fragrance sensitisers, paraben preservatives) are replaced by moisturisers that temporarily mask the disruption with the same category of synthetic ingredients — perpetuating the cycle.

What plant-based oils actually do differently

Plant-based oils have molecular structures that penetrate the stratum corneum rather than sitting on top of it. Jojoba oil is not technically an oil — it is a liquid wax ester with a molecular structure almost identical to human sebum. The skin does not recognise it as foreign. It absorbs readily and mimics the skin's own protective secretions.

Rosehip seed oil contains trans-retinoic acid precursors — compounds the skin converts to vitamin A, which regulates cell turnover and supports barrier repair. Shea butter contains triterpenes (including lupeol and butyrospermol) with documented anti-inflammatory activity against enzymes that degrade collagen. These are not gentler substitutes for synthetic ingredients. They are metabolically relevant inputs that the skin's own repair mechanisms can actually use.

COSMOS certification — the European Union's highest natural cosmetics standard, held by Elodie's Naturals — requires that every ingredient be traceable to a natural or organic source, that processing methods be assessed for environmental impact, and that the final formula be independently verified. It is not a marketing claim. It is a third-party audit of every compound in the product.

Every product in the Dry & Sensitive Skin collection passed DRL's two-stage AI audit. Elodie's Naturals is COSMOS certified. Sagrada BioSkincare is Made Safe certified and won the Beauty Shortlist Award 2025. Ora's Amazing Herbal uses certified organic ingredients with a maximum of six per formula.

The DRL Edit
