Most people assume outdoor air is the pollution problem. The EPA has been documenting the opposite for decades: indoor air is consistently two to five times more polluted than outdoor air in US homes. The primary sources are not industrial. They are products on the shelves under the sink.

What synthetic fragrance is actually doing to your indoor air

Synthetic fragrance is the most commonly undisclosed chemical category in consumer products. It is legally protected as a trade secret under US law, which means a product can list "fragrance" as a single ingredient while that word conceals hundreds of distinct compounds — including phthalates (endocrine disruptors documented in human blood and urine), synthetic musks (which accumulate in human adipose tissue and have been detected in breast milk), formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and volatile organic compounds that off-gas into enclosed air for hours after application.

A conventional cleaning spray applied in a closed kitchen releases VOCs that remain measurable in indoor air for two to four hours. Applied daily, the cumulative exposure is significant — particularly in the hours when the body is at rest and the airways are most receptive.

PVA: the plastic dissolving into your drinking water

Conventional dishwasher pods are wrapped in polyvinyl alcohol film — PVA — a plastic designed to dissolve in water. The marketing presents this as convenience. The environmental reality is that PVA dissolves into your water supply with every wash cycle. Wastewater treatment plants remove approximately 75% of PVA; the remainder enters waterways. Studies have detected PVA microplastics in drinking water sources downstream of treatment facilities.
